When I was developing my first freemium game in 2009, I remember how confusing it was. There was so much to learn: from social game design to freemium monetization and from in-game economies to live operations.
And now it's that much harder with the addition of things like advertising mediation, AI-driven split testing, and to the galaxy of SDKs and publishing partners designed to help with user acquisition.
Let's get real, most teams never really figure this stuff out, which is why their games don't find an audience-- According to Business Insider 99.9% of mobile games are not profitable. Ouch!
This is crazy because billions of dollars are spent on freemium games each year. And yet... the harsh reality is most games are going to fail.
Another tough reality: The teams that succeed are almost always those with previous *successful* Free-to-Play experience. These seasoned hands can be tough to attract, and may specialize only at a single aspect of the freemium model: economy, acquisition, production, etc...
All these challenges can make putting the pieces together feel out of reach but you've got to push through that because Freemium is now the biggest piece of the game industry. It's growing and it's not just a "mobile" thing anymore.
I've been privileged to work on many of free-to-play's most successful games ever: from FrontierVille and CastleVille to major games from EA Sports (I'm not allowed to specify which one), and from brands like the Walking Dead and CSI: to Spongebob Squarepants and Pokemon.
All in all, apps I've worked on have brought in over $500,000,000 in revenues and two are in the top grossing charts right now. My team includes producers, analysts, designers, and product managers who all have experience on hit freemium titles.
